My Top 5: Things you might not have known about me

1. I’m Hispanic but I don’t speak Spanish

Yes, believe it or not I am 100% hispanic! My mom is from Guatemala and my dad is from El Salvador! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked if I was Asian or if I was mix. I’m actually first generation hispanic American. My mom came to America when she was 18 and my dad came here in his mid-twenties. I am very proud of my background, though one thing I regret is not keeping up with speaking in Spanish. Spanish was my first language but I slowly lost it when I started attending school. My mom tried signing me up for classes, or we would watch movies in Spanish, but nothing really helped and I eventually I lost interest when it came to speaking the language. However, I do understand it pretty fluently! I just need to start speaking it again, it’s never too late to learn!

2. Disney Lover

I LOVE DISNEY! Now I know a lot of people love Disney, but for me it’s so much more than just the movies and characters, it’s also the nostalgia that comes with it. I grew up watching Disney movies, but more importantly, I grew up watching Disney movies in Spanish! Disney has all of their movies translated to Spanish and my brothers and I didn’t like the other options my mom tried to give us. I don’t think I watched a Disney movie in English until I was in High School! Watching Disney movies was a huge part of my childhood, not only because I loved the characters, but also because it kept me connected with my Hispanic roots. It’s a little hard to explain, but that’s where my love of Disney came from. Plus, now my kids AND husband LOVE Disney almost as much me!

3. I wish I was Asian

If I could be an other ethnicity I would be Asain! I was always around different cultures when I was growing up. Our church had a multicultural Bible study group and at every gathering we would all bring dishes native to our countries, it was my favorite! On top of that, my family’s favorite type of food was Asian. My mom would make Asian dishes all the time, she would even ask her nail lady to go grocery shopping with her so she can pick up tips on how to better cook their dishes! Even now, Micah and I love recreating Asian dishes (lumpias being our favorite! So gooood!). I love all of it; the people, the culture, and of course, the FOOD!

4. Tea over Coffee

If you go to any other blogger’s website you will most likely read about how they can’t function without coffee…well, I’m not that blogger. Coffee gives me a headache and honestly the taste isn’t that appealing to me. I’m definitely more of a herbal tea person! I didn’t drink tea growing up, I actually started getting into it when Micah and I got married. You see, Micah’s grandmother is from England, so he was taught the proper way to make English tea. Now English tea (black tea) is a Steger household staple. Our favorite brand is Yorkshire just in case you were wondering. I like any kind of tea though, but my favorite kind is usually more on the flowery side. Jasmine tea is always a good choice for me. Tea over coffee all day EVERYDAY!

5. I grew up in a Zoo

My dad has always kinda been like an animal whisperer. (Which is kinda funny if you met him because he actually looks like the Dog Whisperer guy!) Growing up, we always had pets in our home; anything from birds, fishes, dogs, turtles, and even frogs. A couple of times we would take in animals because they were hurt, lost or because we just wanted another pet! I remember when we took in a lost cat and helped it find its owner, and another time we even took in a baby bird that fell out of its nest and our dog almost ate it! Even now as a 25 year old I LOVE going to the Zoo. It’s almost embarrassing how excited I get (I think I get more excited than my kids!). My kids do love going to the zoo and they love seeing the animals and it makes me so happy. Animals was a bonding point we had with my family growing up, so it’s pretty cool that I can bring that to my family now.
